Artist's Description

The Forth Bridge, a cantilever type structure, carries the old North British across the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland. Situated 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of central Edinburgh it opened on 4 March 1890, and has a total length of over 2,500 metres metres (8,296 ft). Sometimes called the Forth Rail Bridge or Forth Railway Bridge to distinguish it from the Forth Road Bridge, it is generally known as the "Forth Bridge" ever since its construction.
