Edinburgh Castle basks in the sun on the Castle rock which is actually an extinct volcano. In the foreground is the Ross Fountain, which is of French design. The origins of the castle date back over 1000 years and it is still fully occupied today with museums, an Army base, function rooms and the chapel which is a memorial to the Scottish war dead.
