Artist's Description
The Forth Bridge opened in 1890 to carry the North British Railway across the might Firth of Forth, just North of Edinburgh in Scotland. Previously, rail traffic had to follow a circuitous route via Stirling but the bridge reduced journey times significantly and opened up the Highlands.
The bridge has become an icon of Victorian engineering, and following the disastrous failure of the Tay Bridge will collapsed during a storm with much loss of life, was designed with huge safety factors built in to it.
Despite its size it still has a grace and poise about it that few modern bridges possess and its cantilever design and outline is world famous.
In this shot, taken in at the end of 2011 after a long period of repainting, the bridge is almost clear of the scaffolding and sheeting that had obscured its form and looks fresh and bright in late afternoon sunshine.
