Artist's Description

As far back as the 11th Century, British Christians have made the Pilgrimage to Lindisfarne in Northumbria, U.K. The journey on foot is still arduous and in earlier times, very dangerous.

The last stretch of the journey to Lindisfarne Abbey, a stronghold of the Christian religion for over 1000 years is these days, very easy. A tarmac road and causeway cross the sands that bar the pilgrim's way, but the mile or so crossing of the tidal sand flats can still result in unwary travellers getting caught in the rapidly rising waters. In order to make the journey safer, these tidal refuges have been erected so those caught by the tide can climb the steps and sit out the flood tide.
