Description
The world famous Forth Bridge was in it's time a feat of engineering in a time when such projects were number in the dozens. Following the collapse of the Tay Bridge in the 19th Century, designers decided they needed to restore the confidence of the railway travelling public and this bridge was effectively over-engineered to withstand anything that could be thrown at it.
With three separate spans plus two long pier supported lead spans the bridge was designed to cope with sailing ships passing beneath. The allowance made for this height has made it possible for very large ships to pass beneath bridge.
The bridge is now considered to be an icon of the modern age.
